When is it the best time to drink your coffee?
We all love coffee, some of us like to drink it in the morning, others at night. But since coffee has caffeine, we have to be careful when we drink it. When is the best time to drink our coffee? Keep reading and find out!
When to drink coffee in the morning
Do you usually wake up and grab a coffee right away? Do you grab a coffee in the morning for an energy boost? If you answered yes, you should definitely keep reading. I am going to let you know why having your coffee right away in the morning isn't your best option.
Cortisol and coffee
So there's this hormone called cortisol, that actually helps you stay focused and alert. It helps your immune system, and helps regulate your blood pressure. But when it comes to our early mornings, it is designed to wake us up and get us ready for our day. Cortisol will actually spike and hit a peak at about 30-40 minutes after we wake up. We don’t want to have a shot of caffeine to mix with our morning cortisol spike, this is because it is connected to many negative health effects. Instead we want to wait until after our cortisol spike.
Drink your coffee after the cortisol spike!
Let your body give itself the cortisol boost it needs. You should be alert and focused at the beginning of the morning if you give your body a chance. Then about 2-3 hours after you wake up,your cortisol level will dip, and your body will need a boost of energy. This is when you should drink your coffee. So if you wake up at 9 am, you should drink your coffee around noon to get the most out of it. This is the optimum time that will give you the most energy to take on the day, and will also help you avoid any negative health effects.
When to drink your coffee at night?
Drinking coffee at night can be tricky. Sometimes we want a boost of energy in the evening, but at the same time we don’t want to be up all night without being able to sleep. It's important to know that caffeine can stay in your system for 3-5 hours. So if you are going to have a coffee at night, try to have it at least 3 hours before your bedtime. You can also try having decaf if you really feel like a cup of coffee before bed.
